The bridge lies on the road between the towns Tábor and Písek and it spans the Vltava river nor far from the small village Podolí about 10 km east of Písek.
The connection between both banks of the river was originally over the old suspension bridge from the first half of the 19th century. It was taken into parts and built again over the Lužnice river near the village Stádlec after the completion of the new one.
The project of the new bridge won the Grand Prix in Lutych in 1939. Its construction began in the same year and it continued till 1942. The ferroconcrete bridge is 510 m long and its main arch has span 150 m. The road runs 65 m above the water level.
