The pond is sometimes called Holná. Velká Holná ("Big" Holná) is the 9th largest pond in Bohemia. It lies on the Holenský Potok (Holná Stream) about 3 km south-east of the small town Kardašova Řečice in the game preserve Jemčinská Obora.
The original pond was founded in the 14th century and it was enlarged and solidified by the important pond designer Jakub Krčín in the 16th century. Its dam is 384 long and it holds 5.5 million cubic metres of water. In the middle of the pond with the area 230 ha there is an island called Naxos with a nature reserve.
