Chanovice lies about 10 km north of the town Horažďovice on the road from Horažďovice to the village Kasejovice, 590 m a.s.l.
The fortress from the beginning of the 15th century stood originally in the village. It was a residence of the Chanovský family from Dlouhá Ves. The Church of Elevation of Holy Cross was founded in the second half of the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century the owners rebuilt the fortress into the Classicist chateau with a large English park.
Since 2005 a part of Chanovice has been protected. The protected area contains the old part of the village, the open-air museum, the chateau with the park, and the observation tower on Chlum hill (605 m).
The chateau is not open to public, but there are two museum exhibitions inside: Folk Trade In The Bohemian Forest Region and Gallery Of The Keepers Of The Folk Trade. There can also be visited the information centre in a farm building in the areal.
About 4 km long instructional trail leads through the village and the surroundings of Chanovice. It acquaints visitors with the village and country and their history and interests.
