The ruins of the Šternberk castle are situated about 8 km north-west of the town Telče near the small village Lhotka.
The castle (also called Štamberk) was established in the 13th century. Its origin is not known well, it was probably founded by the Šternberk family on the rock above the village Lhotka. The last mentions originate from 1415, when Jan Sr. from Hradec was the owner of the castle. The castle disappeared probably in 1423, when it was captured by the Hussites after a hard battle. It was never restored.
The remains of walls, tower and bulwarks have been preserved up to the present day.
Šternberk lies in the nature reserve Štamberk a Kamenné Moře (Štamberk and Rocky Sea) in the mixed forest with predominance of beeches and maples.
It is accessible along the road from Telč to the town Jindřichův Hradec, turning-off in the village Mrákotín to the small village Lhotka. The marked tourist path leads to the castle from the small parking-lot near the pub in Lhotka (about 1 km).
